Step Out!

Change is usually not something that many of us welcome happily in our lives. A big change usually makes us uncomfortable because it requires us to change our long-held approaches and perceptions. But if we choose to step out of such comfort zones, we may end up realizing that changes actually bring in new opportunities and usher in new horizons to our life.

In the animal world, we know that mothers often push their children forcefully out of their comfort zones so that they can learn how to walk, or hunt, or fly. This may seem very uncomfortable for the young one, but it is necessary for its growth.

As a character called Socrates from Dan Millman’s book ‘Way of the Peaceful Warrior’ once famously said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting with the old, but on building the new.” This is precisely the sort of perspective that one needs to develop in order to grow through change, rather than crumble in the face of it.

The Bible speaks of a young man named David, whose life changed overnight, when he went from being a shepherd boy to standing up and facing a giant warrior called Goliath. Yet David did not turn back in fear at this huge challenge. He chose to step out and face the giant, armed with nothing but his faith in God and five smooth stones. The rest is history, as we all have heard of how David brought down Goliath.

Each of us may also face some giants within ourselves. Maybe it is time for us to step out of our comfort zones with faith, embrace the change and ask God for the necessary strength and wisdom. Who knows, you may not just grow through the change, but also become a change-maker for those around you.
