Bent but not broken

Don’t we all go through days when we ask, “Why do I even exist?!”, or traumatic experiences when we say, “I don’t think I can take this anymore.” Our lives are built on various things and relationships which feel like strong pillars to us, such as family, friends, financial security, education, skills, health etc. When some of these pillars are shaken, it may cause panic in our lives.

Pain and crisis have a reputation of showing up in the most unexpected ways. They may come in the form of financial loss, the death of a loved one, sickness or a loss of reputation. When such things occur, it feels like we’ve hit rock-bottom. Everything we relied on seems like it’s dissolving away, unable to support us anymore, and leaving us feeling totally bent out of shape and almost broken.

But what if we are told that there could be something beautiful that comes out of something like this? Many people have gone through such difficult phases, just to discover that they are not as alone as they felt. There is a God who created them and becomes most intimately up-close and personal precisely in such moments. There is a beautiful sentence in the Bible which says, “God is close to the broken-hearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” This is not because God is a sadist, but because we tend to be most receptive to Him in such times. When we feel supported by our life’s pillars, we are often totally oblivious of this loving God. So if you feel a bit bent out of shape today, stay strong; God will come beside you if you would let Him and not allow you to be utterly broken, and He will eventually become your unshakeable foundation.
