Republic Day

India is all geared up to celebrate its 73rd Republic Day today. This day marked the declaration of India as an independent republic by the Indian National Congress in 1930, in what is known as its “Purna Swaraj” resolution. This is why the leaders of independent India chose the 26th of January as the day on which the Indian Constitution, drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, officially came into effect in 1950.

A grand celebration is planned each year which is spearheaded by a speech from the President followed by a grandiloquent parade at Rajpath, New Delhi by the Indian military, followed by hoisting of the national flag, and distribution of awards having national value. A wreath is laid on the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate by the Prime Minister, paying homage to all the martyrs of the armed forces, followed by a gun salute and singing of the National Anthem. Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and Vir Chakra are presented to gallantry award winners. Cultural tableaus showcased by different people groups are a spectacle to behold. Republic Day upholds the spirit of democracy while reminding citizens of the constitutional tenets based on which the nation is governed.

The principles that are laid down by each country protect the rights of its people. The fact that most nations’ struggle for freedom culminate in attempts to form functional governments on the basis of a Constitution point towards the necessity of having laws to govern human behaviour. Doesn’t it seem logical then, that the one who laid the foundation of our entire Earth would also have placed certain fundamental principles for all to abide by? Yes! This is why the Bible tells us that God has given us principles, rules and regulations to adhere to which can keep our lives from falling into evil ways and protect us from self-harm. God promises to love and protect us if we abide in relationship with him through obedience. As India celebrates her Republic Day today, let us all ponder on the laws which God has already written on our hearts, and ask him for grace that may enable us to abide by them.

“But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.”
-Bible (Psalm 103:17-18).
