“As I walked through the wilderness of the world, I dreamed, and behold I saw a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book in his hand, and a great burden upon his back. I looked, and i saw him open the book and read therein, and as he read, he wept and trembled, and not been able to longer to contain, he broke out with a lamentable cry, saying “What shall I do?”
Rosalie de rosset writes in her introduction to the book, ” Well, who can stop reading here? There are so many questions on the above passage : Who is this man? Why is he clothed in rags? Why is his face from his own house? What burden did he carry? What book was in his hands? What made him weep & tremble? What made him cry? ” These questions are such a common allegory to our day to day life, that after reading this passage it almost intrigues any reader to know this person, a person who carries burden to our modern day lives and we all end up saying, in that situation when we realise “What shall I do?”
