At eighteen, it is surprisingly easy to believe that everybody else has started the race before you.
Someone from school has already built an app. Another person has completed three online certifications in AI. Somebody you barely spoke to in Class 12 suddenly has “Founder” in their Instagram bio. LinkedIn is even worse. You open it intending to spend five minutes looking for internships and leave convinced that everyone your age is winning except you.
If you are entering technology, the anxiety gets amplified because there is always something new to learn. A new programming language, a new framework and also a new certification everybody suddenly seems to have. And now, AI tools can write code, explain errors, generate entire prototypes and do in minutes what would once have taken a beginner an entire afternoon.
It can leave an eighteen-year-old wondering: How am I ever supposed to catch up?
If someone ten years ahead could answer, the reply might sound something like this. And this would be the right career advice for students in tech.
Dear 18 Year Old Me,
You are spending far too much time trying to look advanced.
You will download courses you never finish because somebody online said the skill was “essential.” You will add technologies to your résumé after using them twice. You will look at people who seem years ahead and quietly calculate how far behind you must be.
Here is something you won’t understand yet: nobody stays ahead for very long in technology.
The programming language you are convinced will define your career may eventually become just one tool among many. Platforms will change. Entire categories of work will appear that you cannot currently name.
And then AI will accelerate everything. There will come a point when you can describe what you want and watch a machine generate code for you. It will debug errors, explain unfamiliar functions and create working first drafts before you have finished making coffee.
For a while, you might wonder whether learning to code was a mistake. It wasn’t. But you will begin to understand that coding was never only about typing the right syntax.
The people who become valuable will increasingly be the people who can understand a problem, break it down properly, recognise a weak solution, ask better questions and know when the machine has produced something that looks convincing but is completely wrong.
In other words, your ability to think will matter more than your ability to look impressive.
Build before you feel qualified
There is another thing I wish you would stop doing. Waiting. You keep telling yourself you will build something once you learn enough. After this JavaScript course. After you understand databases. After you learn APIs. After you become “good.” That day never arrives. Build the terrible first version.
Make a website for your college club. Participate in a hackathon and solve some real world challenges using tech. Automate something unnecessarily. Create a ridiculous app nobody needs. Volunteer to solve a real problem for somebody even if you need to Google half the process. The small projects you are embarrassed to show people will teach you things no tutorial can.
You will encounter confusing errors at 1:00 a.m. You will realise that something which worked perfectly on your laptop breaks everywhere else. You will learn that people use products differently from how developers imagine they will. Those experiences become part of your education.
Your career advantage may be curiosity
The most useful career advice for students in tech is not to predict which tool will dominate five years from now. Nobody really knows. Instead, become comfortable being a beginner repeatedly. That sounds less impressive than “Master Python in 30 days,” but it is much closer to how good careers actually develop.
Learn the fundamentals. Learn how systems work. Learn how to research something you don’t understand. Learn how to communicate technical ideas to non-technical people. Learn to work with others without making them feel stupid.
And yes, learn to use AI well. Use it to speed up repetitive work. Ask it questions. Let it explain unfamiliar code. Experiment with what it can do. But don’t outsource your curiosity to it. There is a difference between getting an answer and understanding why the answer works.
Ten years from now, the professionals who struggle may not necessarily be the ones who failed to learn every new tool. They may be the ones who stopped learning because the tools became convenient enough to think for them.
You are not late
At eighteen, your timeline feels urgent because most of the important milestones in your life have happened at roughly the same time as everybody else’s. Everyone wrote board exams together, applied to colleges together and waited for results together. Adult careers don’t work like that.
One person gets an incredible opportunity at twenty-one. Another finds their field at twenty-eight. Somebody changes direction completely at thirty-five. You are going to have years when you move quickly and years when almost nothing seems to happen. Neither tells you your worth.
So stop trying so hard to become impressive quickly. Learn deeply and continue to build things by staying curious all the time. Work with the tools that appear, including AI, without allowing them to replace the thinking that makes you valuable. You do not need to look like an expert at eighteen but rather you need to become someone who knows how to keep learning.
And in a world where technology will continue changing faster than anyone can predict, that may turn out to be one of the safest career skills you can build.
