Algorithms of Influence: Who Really Shapes Our Choices?

Every day, without even noticing, we live under the quiet influence of algorithms. They decide what we see on social media, what products appear in our feed, and so on. What seems like our personal choice is often the result of invisible code predicting our behaviour and shaping our decisions. From what news we read to late-night scrolling on recommended videos, algorithms subtly guide our routines. They promise convenience, but they also raise an important question. Are we in control of our choices, or are our choices being made for us?

Algorithms operate by analyzing user data and engagement patterns to curate personalized content feeds. This information helps construct a unique digital profile for each individual, which the system then uses to predict what content will be most relevant and captivating. While this may seem harmless even helpful, but these invisible mechanisms are engineered not just to anticipate our preferences, but to subtly persuade and influence our behaviour, often without us realizing it.

With AI advancing rapidly, algorithms now drive digital decision-making in areas like shopping, hiring, and even lending. These automated systems shape what we see and how we behave, often without human oversight. As users respond to algorithmic suggestions, a feedback loop forms, reinforcing habits, preferences, and beliefs, sometimes without us even realizing it.

What we see and hear is what we think about. What we think about is what we feel. What we feel influences our reactions. Reactions become habits and it is our habits that determine our destiny.” – Bob Gass

Continuously consuming similar content limits our exposure to diverse viewpoints and ideas. Over time, this narrows our understanding of the world and creates a bias which can distort our perception of reality. What begins as personalization can quietly evolve into manipulation, shaping not just what we consume, but how we think. When our feeds are dominated by content aligned with a particular political ideology, we may unknowingly absorb only one side of the story. As someone wisely said, “If you only know one side of a story, you know nothing at all.” True understanding demands exposure to multiple perspectives without it, our worldview becomes narrow, and our thinking less our own.

Algorithms aren’t going away anytime soon, especially while your screen time continues to generate profit to these platforms. That’s why it’s important to recognize the bait often thrown by social media platforms and learn to avoid it. One way to take back control is by being mindful of what you consume: focus on content that truly benefits you, ignore negative or manipulative feeds, and keep an open mind.

A few other simple steps include:

  1. You can choose to see the “most recent” feed instead of the default recommended ones.
  2. Watching videos from channels you’ve subscribed to, rather than algorithmic suggestions.
  3. Avoid listening to news from these algorithm recommended platforms. Instead follow the News in many other dedicated digital news platforms.

We need to stay aware of the influence of algorithms on our attention and choices. While technology won’t disappear, we can choose how much control it has over us. More importantly, we must remember that real life exists beyond the screen. True understanding comes from being open to different perspectives, listening to others, and stepping outside the digital bubble.
