In today’s fast-paced world, students often carry burdens that are unseen or unnoticed. Behind their excellence in different areas lie silent battles with stress, anxiety, fear and pressure to succeed. A student in this era is expected to be extraordinary in every field, meet the expectations of family, be socially active and productive all the time. In this constant pursuit of perfection, students are forced to sacrifice their emotional well-being. Many of them hesitate to speak out, fearing they will be judged or misunderstood.  As a result, their pain remains hidden and intensifies their emotional struggles. We often come across incidents of students committing or attempting suicide because of the pressures and struggles. In these challenging times where struggles run deep, mental health support for students isn’t optional – it’s essential and a necessity.

Today, more than ever, schools, colleges, and families must realise that mental health is not a luxury- it’s a basic human necessity. Supporting the mental health of students is not just about solving their problems, but creating an environment where they feel safe, understood and valued. Providing opportunities for safe and open conversations, access to professional help can empower students to tackle their struggles with strength and resilience. When we listen to their stories and provide assistance, we not only enhance their academic excellence but also foster resilience and emotional well-being.

How mental health support can be given to the students?

1. Build safe and open communication spaces

Create safe spaces and encourage students to openly discuss any issues related to mental health, normalising discussions on these topics in groups and classes.

2. Strengthen the counselling network in the educational institutions

It’s high time to appoint trained and well-equipped counsellors in every educational institution and host confidential support sessions, regularly checking on the mental health of students.

3. Reduce Academic pressure

Promote balanced homework, flexible deadlines, and healthier exam patterns and focus on learning and understanding rather than just grades and ranks.

4. Create peer-support networks

The peer mentors often reach students than the adults. Promote peer education and support where peers can listen, encourage, and provide the necessary support to students.

5. Promote healthy lifestyle habits

Help them understand the importance of eating a healthy diet, getting proper sleep, engaging in physical activity, and practising mindfulness. Encourage buffer times, hobbies and ideal screen habits.

6. Build an inclusive, non-judgmental environment

Create spaces and environments where students feel free to perform without the thought of being judged, compared or pulled down.

As we address the mental health struggles of the students, it’s essential to realise that mental health is not an option but a huge responsibility. Every student, no matter how confident they appear, might carry some amount of fear, pressure or stress that can eventually become too overwhelming and weigh them down. When educational institutions, families, and communities join together to listen to their struggles and respond with empathy and support, we create young minds who are entirely free from their emotional burdens. Supporting the young minds will give them the courage to speak, the space to heal, and the assurance that they don’t have to endure their struggles alone. When we provide mental health support for students, we safeguard our future communities, nation, and the whole world.
