Mother’s Day

Have you ever thought which is the toughest job in the world? A job such that it is ever-evolving, extremely tiring, where you can’t take time-off, and doesn’t offer either a handsome salary or any increments while being a lone personal journey for the individual. Yes! That is the job of being a mother.

As the child grows, the mother also learns to transition into various phases of the journey that is motherhood. Each day is a new experience and comes with its own highs and lows.

And to commemorate all that mothers do, and that mothers are – we celebrate Mother’s day – every year on the second Sunday of May. A day dedicated to honouring and cherishing mothers across the globe.

The origins of Mother’s Day lie in the early 1900s when a lady in Philadelphia named Anna Jarvis had held a memorial service in the loving memory of her mother who used to organize women’s groups for friendship. As Anna kept observing this day honouring her mother, soon the word spread and in 1914 it was declared to be a national holiday to honour the mothers. And to this day, it continues to be celebrated, all across the globe.

While everyone celebrates Mother’s Day, one must really wonder if we truly appreciate & cherish all that mothers do? In many ways consumerism and commercialisation of Mother’s Day have outpaced the real intent behind the day.

Consider this, in the year 2018, a whopping $23 billion were spent on Mother’s Day towards buying gifts and cards. But does buying a gift or a card really compensate for the role our mothers have played in our lives? Their immense unsaid and unseen sacrifices, the never-ending days of hard toil, sleepless nights, extreme patience and the time they devote are priceless and can never be repaid anyhow.

No doubt that motherhood is taxing! The demands are increasing by the day. Given the fast-paced cultural progressions and our ever-changing society, it is quite overwhelming for mothers to decide on how to bring up their children when faced with multiple opinions. Moreover, in the present-day context, there is always a tussle between careers and devoting quality time to bringing up children.

Being a mother, one has to be consciously aware of her influence over the lives of her children. Each decision that she takes, the way she handles situations etc., leaves a lasting impact on their lives, either scarring them or building them. Mothers leave behind a heritage as they bring up and mould the lives of their children, nurturing them with the right values systems and attitudes which consequently impact the society. This is how mothers have the power to change the world by providing a model of life to their young ones.

If you are a mother, may this Mother’s Day brighten your life as you reminisce the days or years you have been a mother and reflect on the loving impact you continue to impart in the lives of your children. Wishing you a blessed Happy Mother’s Day!
