speak up for change

Every year on November 25th, the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This is the day that confronts us with the painful truth that far too many women still live unheard and unseen. But the silence that hid their pain has started to fall away. Across the world, courageous voices are rising-survivors, activists, and allies demanding accountability, dignity, and real change. On this day, let us honour their strength and reaffirm our collective commitment: to listen, to support, to act. Let’s speak up for change.

In India, the statistics speak volumes. According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau, 4,48,211 crimes against women were reported in 2023 — a number that reflects not just legal breaches but broken lives and shattered dignity. Probably more disquieting is where the bulk of this violence is occurring. The largest share, almost 30%, falls under cruelty by husbands or relatives. These are not just numbers; they are individual stories of fear, endurance, and resistance. Women around the world are stepping forward, sharing their truths, and demanding accountability. As we mark this day, it’s not enough to condemn the violence; we must amplify the voices that demand justice, the movements that transform policy, and the solidarity that sustains change. This is a call: break the silence and build that future in which no woman lives in fear.

In a vast and diverse country like India, the realities of violence against women have many facets: from hidden domestic abuse within closed doors and workplace harassment being passed off as “normal” to public spaces where safety is a privilege and online platforms transformed into breeding grounds for intimidation. Yet, within the landscape of fear, something remarkable is slowly unfolding: women are speaking up for change. Their voices, once hushed by stigma, shame, and systemic neglect, now echo in courts, on media platforms, and within community networks as they rewrite what courage looks and feels like.

This wave of truth-telling did not happen overnight. The years of spadework carried out by grassroots organisations, women-led movements, legal reforms, and digital activism have propelled it. Helplines, support groups, and crisis centres have created spaces where women are seen and heard. Social media, once a space of risk, has now been turned into a microphone for those demanding accountability. Yet, when women speak out, their articulation is not merely about personal pain but raises a mirror to society, challenging every excuse, every tradition that normalises abuse.

Speak up for Change

One of the most powerful ways to speak up for change is by believing and supporting survivors. Too often, women hesitate to share their experiences because they fear blame, shame, or dismissal. Listening without judgment, offering emotional support, and guiding them toward safe resources can break the cycle of silence. Education also plays a transformative role. Challenging harmful norms, addressing gender stereotypes in schools, homes, and workplaces, sets the foundation for a society that values women’s rights. When we raise our children, especially boys, to respect boundaries and reject violence, we shape a safer future.

Another critical intervention is bystander intervention. It’s important to speak out when we are witnesses to harassment, reporting domestic abuse, or confronting sexist practices in day-to-day life. These are acts of courage that give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Even small actions, such as correcting a harmful joke or challenging unequal treatment, also send waves of awareness. We can further amplify this movement by advocating for more stringent laws, supporting women’s organisations, participating in campaigns, and using social media responsibly. When voices are turned into action, that is when change becomes possible.

As we reflect on the multitude of voices that emerged from silence, we recall that change begins with the very moment someone dares to speak. The battle to end violence against women is far from over, but every story shared, every injustice challenged, and every act of courage brings us closer to a world where women live without fear. It is not the survivors’ responsibility; it is up to each of us to listen, support, and stand beside them. Violence can only thrive in silence, but justice grows with every voice refusing to be quiet.
