Choice or Chance?

We are always eager to know what life holds for us in the future. Is our fate pre-determined or is it totally dependent on our own choices? Well, it is a question that has puzzled humankind since time immemorial.

Famous Stoic Philosopher Epictetus wrote, “Some things are in our control and others, not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in a word, whatever are not our own actions.”

Even though we live by our own choices, don’t we all have an instinctive feeling that we are not in total control of our own lives? Yes! Every choice we make has consequences in our life. Yet, sometimes we encounter situations which are beyond our control. And in these situations, we look for help beyond our rational faculties. Well, these are the moments that sometimes lead us to the point where, along with our choices, we seek to find a true and eternal God, whom we can put our trust in.

The Bible says, ‘Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.”

Why not follow that instinct within us and seek a personal relationship with God? Who knows, we may just find deeply satisfying answers to those haunting questions in our hearts about the future, and about the meaning and ultimate purpose of our lives.
