Rights and Duties

26th of January – the day celebrated as Republic Day across the nation of India. Today is the day to celebrate the Constitution of India – the second-longest active constitution in the world. Do you remember studying civics in high school? Most of us have been drilled about the salient features of the Constitution, basic civic sense, and the fundamental rights and duties of a citizen!

We all feel very strongly about the extensive rights that we enjoy as citizens, but often grudge the duties. But are rights without duties of any value? Even as we enjoy exercising our rights, we should remember that duties that shouldered by all are necessary to maintain harmony within society, and for the progress of any nation.

The Bible teaches us to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. If we truly love in this manner, these duties won’t feel burdensome. As we celebrate this day, let us remember to use our rights in a circumspect manner, for the betterment of ourselves and those around us, and to carry out our duties faithfully to keep our India united and peaceful.
